Eleven Months!

I can hardly believe how quickly time is passing. In some ways I am thankful for this (it makes a deployment less depressing), and, in other ways, I wish it would slow down a bit (when I think about only having the girls under my roof for 17 more years HA).

Growth in terms of weight seems to be plateauing a bit. Anni is 17.6 pounds. Unfortunately, I know this because she had to go to the ER last week. (She is fine now!) I would guess that Elli is somewhere around 19 pounds. We continue to rock 3-6 month clothing, but are integrating more and more 6-9 month items into our wardrobe.

I’m cherishing these toothless grins. No teeth yet! Thank goodness the girls love food and don't seem to mind mushing it around in their mouths. We are getting more hair, though! It now gets snarly in the bath tub, and it’s harder for me to achieve fuzzy, spiky hair-dos with a towel. As for color, in the words of a favorite L.M. Montgomery character: “I’d say it’s definitely auburn, and that’s sort-of close to blonde.”

This week, after 3 failed prior attempts (necessary equipment was unavailable), the girls sat and joined us at the table for 2 restaurant meals. (I even allowed them to digest some IHOP pancakes. Yum!) The girls love to people watch. (I’m certain that we have a lesson in staring at people ahead of us. ) Fortunately, we always seem to make friends. And, we make a lot of elderly people happy. Oh, the girls are simply delighted to smile and stare at the retirees who are shopping or eating. Anni will even wave upon command. (Elli has to be in the mood.) It’s a good thing I’m a happy person, because I have to say “thank you” a lot. My light conversation skills are getting good exercise. And, in all of our travels, the girls babble and squeal in the car – more often and more boisterously if I have the radio pumping.

Thanks for our beautiful seat covers, Grandma B! And our place-mats, Auntie Jess!

Both girls are crawling full-time now. Elli will pull or push herself up to standing in any given situation. Anni gets her little butt waggling so fast that I can hardly arrive at her destination in advance. They have been practicing taking steps with Luke. I’ve seen a huge improvement in their dexterity in recent weeks. They can orient objects in space – picking up fairly heavy toys and arranging them at the angle they desire. They carry objects of interest with them from room to room, and bang things together to see what noises they make. Everything new they pick up gets the “shake test” to see if it rattles. Elli likes to swiftly deconstruct stacked blocks and toys. Anni prefers to disassemble them layer by layer, and gets quite upset if it happens any other way.

Mailing Envelopes Get the "Shake Test"

Elli Masters Multi-Step Toy Repetition (This just amazes me.)

Remember last month when Elli was doing everything and Anni was content to watch? Yeaaaaaah. That changed a couple of days ago. Suddenly Anni is getting herself into all of the trouble she can, moving from one thing to the next. We can cover just about all of the “off-limit” items/areas in a matter of 5 minutes. And her sense of timing is uncanny… (or is it? ) She seems to wait to embark on her adventures until my services are employed elsewhere (i.e. changing a very stinky diaper).

Language development has been a big growth area. The girls can make an assortment of noises with their lips and tongues from clicks, to clucks, to kisses. Anni will “kiss kiss” a certain baby in a favorite book, and give fishy kisses when prompted. Elli gives French kisses, which are sloppier than you can imagine. Anni understands the phrase “turn the page” and Elli understands “switch”, as in: switch the hand that is holding the toy so I can wash the other or put it through a sleeve. Elli will initiate Peek-A-Boo by hiding her eyes behind a book or burp cloth. Both girls use common syllables, such as: “mum-mum” and “nine-nine” (Elli sounds very German when she says this). I know they mean something specific, but I haven’t quite figured it out yet. Elli does say “moo” whenever I do, but it’s more primal - like an “ooo” that initiates from the gut. She uses this to call Lucy (Anni makes kissing noises, because this is how Luke calls the dog).

That’s probably enough… It’s been a big month!

Salon Doubleshot

Recently, the entrepreneurial patrons of the Cafe Doubleshot started requesting salon services to accompany their fine dining experience. Thus, the birth of Salon Doubleshot.

Anni is the resident stylist. Creative. Edgy. Fickle. Impulsive.

Elli is the eager client.

She initiates the transformation from Cafe to Salon by offering up her locks with a lean.

This particular coiffure features our signature blend of patty pan squash and zucchini extracts.

The faux hawk increases the flow of chi, enhances magnetic resonance with the earth, and makes us altogether giddy.

In addition to approving all styling appointments, I provide shampoo and massage services. On days that appointments are simply not available, Cafe patrons may have to sit several feet apart.

Luke safely made it home!

He wasn't home but a few hours before his shenanigans started up.

Elli's new look (and the blister on her toe from Army-crawling) encouraged her to do real crawling full-time. (And when did she get so long? I hadn't noticed until I watched the video back.)

Thanks to Auntie Miki for our leg (and arm?) protection!

Making Ready

We're getting all of our affairs in order, because Daddy is coming home any day now for a little R&R.

Elli researches some talking points
to discuss with Daddy.

Fort Building 101

Growing up, my brother and I were excellent fort builders. Give us some cushions, blankets, clothespins, paint-stained sheets and a few stationary objects and we could make an outstanding edifice.

The girls' latest interest in what's beneath a blanket inspired me to introduce the most rudimentary of forts, and see what happened.

I give you the best 1 and a half hours I have in recent memory... summed up by this minute long video.

Laundry List

So, what was it that distracted Anni enough for me to catch her crawling on video? The laundry, of course. There are lots of fun things to do with laundry:

perch atop it and people watch

tip it over and play in it

boat on it

make a tent with it

practice phrenology in it

practice still life with it

hairstyle with it

disappear in it

I said... disappear in it!

Oh, yes, the laundry gave us some good laughs...

laugh about it

Happy 4th!

Bust A Move 6

The move is busted. Anneli did some real crawling 2 days ago, but she refused to repeat the effort with the camera rolling.
Like waiting for the pot to boil...

Today, she was finally distracted from the camera enough to show off her new moves.

The cutest crawl. Ever.

Best Friends

One of my hopes for the girls is that they will become true best friends. I've started to notice them take a genuine interest in each others' well-being, and not just for the sake of entertainment.

Elli won't eat and looks very worried if Anni is upset and not eating. Two days ago the girls held hands while sitting in their high chairs. They'd done it before, but this was done with deliberation. Anni held out her hand, and Elli took it. Whoa!

Here are some other best friend moments:

best friends wrestle

best friends agree on best-friend-y things

best friends play

best friends share

best friends stick together

A Contradiction

I don't mind poop. I don't mind poop at all. And, I've seen a lot of baby poo. As a matter of fact, I don't even consider the defecation of my sweet babies to be dirty at all. So what if it gets on my hand? A little baby wipe action will hold me over until hand washing is feasible. And, you know what? I'll change your kiddo's dirty deed, too.

But, boogers? I can't stand them... even on my own kids. Ew.

Anni: Hmm... I smell a contradiction.

And, furthermore, the girls will let me wipe their bottoms, but not their noses.

This makes no sense.
